Name It to Claim It Contest – Help Us Name our New Sheath Cleaner and Win the First Bottle

This one is becoming a classic. Help us figure out a name for our new all natural sheath cleaner and win – you guessed right – the first bottle!

We stand behind our products, and it’s important for us to involve you in their development. Plus you’re awesome and you have have great ideas. We know that we couldn’t possibly come up with so many great ideas by ourselves.

We’re about to launch an all natural sheath cleaner. Did you know that your usual sheath cleaner most likely contains sodium lauryl or laureth sulphates?  These are surfactants that are toxic to fish and wildlife – and to my ever lasting amazement, we use products with these ingredients on our horse’s nether regions! What’s up with that?

Our answer is, naturally, an all natural sheath cleaner. It’s made with gentle coconut and beet surfactants, and healing lavender. It’s PH balanced, mild, but very effective in removing the gunk build up. Horses find the lavender scent very comforting and we all want our horse to be relaxed during “THE JOB”, don’t we?

Whiskers : Clip or Not to Clip?

Do you clip your horse’s whiskers for that show polished look?

At first sight they may seem little redundant and not particularly appealing (think clean shaven guy vs. one with some serious unkempt facial hair). But let’s think beyond the curb appeal here. Whiskers are there for a reason. They tell the horse something is getting too close to his eyes – like a branch. It’s a protection against getting poked in the eye, which can lead to irritation or infection. Not fun! Some horses can also be pretty adamant about refusing having ointments applied to their eyes.

So protect your horse’s peepers and go natural!

Snow & Winter Hoof Care

Snow & Winter Hoof Care

As you probably notice, your horse’s hooves grow at a significantly slower rate in the winter and start to accelerate again with longer days and more sunlight. This may mean saving on farrier and scheduling regular work further apart, but it’s a double edged sword. Cracks and any other hoof defects take much longer to clear up.

Hooves & Snow : The Good Part

Freezing temperatures are not friendly environment for bacteria and fungus. Get your leg up on thrush problems and treat regularly to make sure your horse’s hooves are ready for the oh-soo-thrush-prone spring season.

Hooves & Snow : The Bad Part

Is your horse walking on snowballs? Wet snow tightly packed in the hoof (especially shod ones) can cause tripping, pain and may lead to injury. You may consider pulling your horses shoes off for the winter. It will decrease the chance of “snow-balling” and give the hooves some time to regenerate. If your horse requires to be shod at all times, ask your farrier to apply anti-snowball pads. You can try Pam cooking spray on the bottom of the hoof as a short term solution.

TIP: For healthy hooves try our Hoof Therapy Therapeutic Hoof Serum. It  moisturizes dry, cracked hoofs, softens hardened frogs, treats contracted heels and protects against the elements. Organic Hemp, Wheat Germ, Apricot Kernel and Olive Oil are rich in the essential fatty acids vital for healthy hoof growth.
