If you’ve ever showed up at your horse’s paddock to find him a tail rubbed raw and clumps of tail hair falling out, you know what it feels like. You want to cry, you want to scream, you want to be mad at him, but you know it’s not his fault, so you just quietly despair (or not so quietly, if you’re anything like me). You know how long it takes to have the precious hair grow back. FOREVER!

Spring is in full swing and if you live in an area known for ticks, guess what…The reason behind the sudden onslaught of tail rubbing might be ticks nested at the base of your horse’s tail. Some horses have a mild allergic reaction to tick bites – like my gelding – and they get so itchy they just can’t help themselves.

Solution? No quickie here. It takes elbow grease, a wide tooth comb and a bit of time. Especially if your horse’s tail is thick. Peeling a layer after a layer of hair and examining every bit and piece of your horse’s tail base is quite a detective work, but it has to be done (if you care about your horse’s tail enough that is). Signs that you’re getting close to finding one is a yellow like crumbs in the affected area. Pluck the ticks you find out with a pair of tweezers.

And how do you prevent the tick infestation at the base of the tail in the first place? We’ve figured out that thorough, regular and generous application of our 100% Natural De-Stress Intensive Mane and Tail Treatment does a triple duty. It not only leaves your horse’s tail, radiant, smooth and tangle free, it also makes ticks stay away. Rubbing De-Stress into the base of the tail also promotes healthy hair growth thanks to rosemary plant extract and Tee Tree Oil is a powerful antibacterial.

And did I mention that your horse will love you? He will make all kinds of funny approving faces and if he’s anything like my boy, he will come and stick his bum in your face to tell you : “mom can I have some more”?

It provides immediate comfort and also leaves behind a protective film that the gnats will stay clear off. They’re not the biggest fans of essential oils.

How does it do it?

The natural antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antifungal benefits of Myrrh, Tea Tree and Lavender Essential Oils aids in healing of bug bites. Antioxidant rich Green Tea Infusion and ULTRA moisturizing Cocoa Butter help to create a barrier between sensitive skin and the environment. Allantoin and Certified Organic Hemp Oil calm skin irritations while Honeysuckle stimulates the removal of toxins. Also great to clear rain rot, scraches, minor cuts and scrapes or other skin irritations and more.

Your horse will thank you…

What is it like to have a Grooming Job? Super excited to share this guest blog post by the people who know this more than anybody else – Professional Equine Grooms. If career as a pro equine groom is something you wish to pursue, joining their community is the best first step you can take.

This is a great question, with so many levels! Mainly, it’s a whole lot of responsibility, with not a whole lot of time in the spotlight. Grooming, by it’s very nature, is a behind the scenes job. You are there before dawn sometimes, and after sunset on many occasions. The barn and horses magically get cleaned several times a day. Multiple feedings are taken care of, and hay seems to stack itself. A perfect stranger, new to horses, might get the idea that it’s very little work! Ultimately, a Groom is responsible for many other things besides just stacking hay and sweeping the barn. The health and well being of the horse is top priority.

You are responsible for knowing each horse inside and out, top to bottom, front to back. And having that knowledge, you are responsible for noticing any and all changes in your horses. How they act, how they eat, how they poop. Upon noticing any change, you are responsible for carrying out the directions of your Employer, the Veterinarian, or the Farrier. You are also responsible for carrying out the “plan” of the day. What’s the riding plan? The turnout plan? The hand walking plan? Is the Veterinarian or Farrier coming? Hay or shavings delivery? (And don’t get me started on what to do if someone is early or late – kick in those multi-tasking tools!)

There are, of course, many other dimensions to the job description that don’t involve the horses directly. Taking care of the barn, tack, feed room, tack room, arenas, and turn outs also falls under your umbrella. It’s a long day with lots to do! Yes, having a Grooming job is tough and busy, it’s also very rewarding. There is nothing like watching your horse enter the gate, go down centerline, or have a clear round. There’s a bit of pride knowing that your horse is turned out beautifully because of you!

This all natural formula is made with gentle yet effective coconut derived cleansers and soothing Honeysuckle Extract to make sure our precious geldings and stud muffins don’t get irritated down there. We’ve also added essential oil of Lavender known for its calming properties. Let’s face it, we all want our horses to be nice and calm when we’re doing THE JOB. If your horse gets a little antsy, give him a sniff and you’ll see his eyes glaze over, making the whole experience more pleasurable for both of you. The result? A happy horse with a squeaky clean lavender smelling undercarriage (and you’ll have lavender scented hands too). Smeg-U-Later is also great for cleaning delicate skin like nostrils and around the eye area!

Why Sheath Cleaning?

If you are the proud owner of a gelding or stallion, you know what I’m talking about. It’s the job we love to hate, and some of us ask our vet to do it or avoid it completely. Yes, I am talking about cleaning your precious gelding or stud muffin’s “undercarriage”. And yes, someone needs to do it.

Smegma is a collection of dirt and excretions that are completely normal. Smegma builds up around the sheath of the penis and should be cleaned for the sake of your horse’s health and comfort. Guidelines suggest twice a year, but every horse is different. Smegma hardens and forms a “bean” that can cause serious pain for your horse. It can lead to behavior problems (really, can you blame him?) and worse, health problems. Dirty sheaths also lead to every horse owner’s nightmare. Tail rubbing! And the odor, you cannot forget that.

p.s. If you’re a mare owner, remember that the wax build up between their teats needs to be cleaned too., as it can lead to an uncomfortable itch.

p.s.s. Smeg-U-Later can be used to clean delicate areas around your horse`s eyes and nostrils. We tested it – on ourselves – and it works fabulous in remove eye makeup. We are against testing on animals, but we`re all over testing products on ourselves. I mean if it irritated my eyes, wouldn’t it irritate my horse`s?

Thank you Elissa for sharing her experience with EcoLicious products.

“We had a couple warm days that got up to 66 degrees, so I finally got the chance to wash Blue’s tail. I am so impressed with these products. I think I had said before that I’d been floating around looking for something that would satisfy me and hadn’t found anything quite right, let alone natural. I’m so glad I tried this brand now.

“It was getting dark out and started to rain a little, so I didn’t even do that thorough of a job and it still came out great. The Squeaky Green & Clean Shampoo was wonderful, I couldn’t believe how clean it got his tail all the way up into the base. It usually takes 2-3 washes and rinses to get all that dirt out and I did not expect it to be clean after just the one wash last night, but it was. And I mean really clean, not even stained. His tail was pure white when I finished. And it was great to be able to put the Silky Moisturizing Rinse Out Coat Mane and Tail Conditioner in right on top of the shampoo. It saved a lot of time not having to rinse twice. His tail is super long and thick and stays tied up all the time, so it takes much longer to wash than the average tail. Once I brought him inside, I wanted to test out how well the conditioner worked, so before I sprayed anything in, I made one big brush stroke from top to bottom and the comb slid right through. I couldn’t believe it. That has NEVER happened even with spray on detangler, let alone without it. It made blow-drying so easy since I didn’t have knots to pick through.

Elissa & Cravimg Blu

I did finish off with the Moisture Maniac Mane & Tail Detangling Infusion spray on conditioner for good measure and loved how his tail just felt natural when it was all dry. Everything else I’ve tried made it sticky, waxy, tacky, slimy, or all of the above. It just felt clean and natural, which is what I was going for. And the glimmer it left was pretty amazing too. His hair is sort of transparent, so it’s really hard to get a shine. I’ll probably never even need to use the whitening product at this rate.”
